It has been a busy week chez nous. Trust me, the best time to replace your carpets is when you’re moving in and the house is empty. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible. So, replacing your carpets turns out to be a mini-house move. You have to empty all the rooms which require carpet or whatever you’re replacing the floor covering with. In our case that was two offices, a spare bedroom, the main bedroom with walk-in robe, and the lounge. Contents of rooms have to be stashed everywhere else.
Of course, you can hire people to move stuff for you. But even so, you need to empty bookshelves, remove drawers from dressing tables, bedside tables etc. And when it’s all over you have to put them all back. We decided to do ourselves a favour and not replace the carpet in the bottoms of the built-in robes. For us, that would have increased the degree of difficulty a couple of notches. And who cares, anyway?
The carpet people could provide movers at an additional cost, which is fine. But. They would not move adjustable electric beds, TVs, computers, or electrical recliner chairs. Ie the heaviest, most complicated items. I suppose this would be due to the usual legal caveats. So, we did the small pieces ourselves the day before and enlisted the help of a friend for the heavy furniture on the day.
The carpet layer had some nifty little things to make it easy to shift furniture by sliding. They’re called furniture sliders (duh) and you’ll find them at hardware stores and online. We’d never heard of them.

By the time the carpet layer started every tiled surface in the house was stacked with bookshelves, drawers, cabinets, coffee tables, cartons of books and DVDs etc etc. Getting to the kitchen was an obstacle course. As each room was completed we moved the furniture back.
Anyway, it’s all done. It looks great. And we’re both knackered.
So that will be all for a couple of weeks. Then the tiler will be coming in to start on the bathrooms.
Meanwhile, progress is being made, albeit it slowly, on Drarkghon’s Treasure (or whatever I end up calling it). I’ve passed 60,000 words which means it’s a proper book. I’m fairly sure I know how the ending will work but there are a few loose ends that need to be tied off. And, you know, I might change my mind.
I came across a great article about the new Snow White movie. (Yeah, I didn’t know, either) I think this is worth a read. So often we see movies outside their historical context – and so often movie makers create a film that’s supposed to be set in (say) medieval times and they have characters behaving as they would in our times. Disney’s original Snow White came out in 1937. If you look at the film with that in mind … well that’s what the article is about. Snow White and Historical Context.
And in a late news flash, the election was called on Friday morning. We’ll have our chance to kick out this bunch of incompetents on the 3rd May. I hope everyone has the sense to realize that what’s happening in the USA is not what can happen here. Dutton is not Trump and we have a significantly different political system. Albo and his merry men will point and shout LOOK OVER THERE!!! SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING??? It’s a con, folks. Please make your decision based on what’s happening in Australia and the policies offered by all parties. (And put the Greens last. They’re Marxist nutjobs.)
