We take a journey up to Cairns and across to the Gulf of Carpentaria involving a number of historic trains

Heading North again We ride the Spirit of Queensland train from Maryborough up to Cairns

Back to Kuranda We take the trip up to Kuranda by cable car and come down on the vintage train

West towards the Gulf We leave Cairns and drive across the Atherton tablelands on our way to Cobbold Gorge Resort.

Cobbold Gorge – a hidden treasure We drift between the walls of Cobbold Gorge and later we go on a helicopter ride.

Through the Outback to the Gulf We visit a string of tiny outback towns and get a feel for living in isolation

Karumba – of barramundi and ghost nets We arrive at Karumba, where we visit a barramundi nursery (fascinating), learn about ghost nets, and take an evening wildlife cruise,

The Gulflander – and wedgies We return to Normanton to take a ride on the vintage Gulflander train, and we encounter a family of wedge-tailed eagles

Mount Surprie and a trip on the Savannahlander We return to Joe’s place at Mt Surprise before heading off on another vintage train, the Savannahlander

Surprises and the Undarra Lava Tubes We’re taken on a surprsing tour of Mt Surprise, then we visit the fabled lava tubes at Undarra.

It’s worth spending days in Herberton We’re heading back to Cairns and one of our stops is an all-too-brief visit to the pioneer village of Herberton.

Time to go home We spend our last day in Cairns before catching the Spirit of Queensland back to Maryborough
